Demo Review: GRAVEWARDS "Demo MMXVIII" (Independent) by Devin Joseph Meaney

Band: GRAVEWARDS
Location: Christchurch
Country of origin: New Zealand
Genre: Funeral Doom Metal
Label: Independent
Release date: April 3, 2018
Recently, I have re-connected with my friend Henry Peachey. We have been in contact over the years due to a similar taste in music, but have not spoken in quite some time. During our re-connection, he informed me that he has put out a doom demo with a friend under the moniker GRAVEWARDS. Long story short, I have received the first demo of this band in the mail today, and the first thing I did was throw it in my cassette player. The first thing I will mention is that this music is absolutely abysmal. (I mean that in a good way). Featuring two tracks and a bonus recording, this cassette is laced with ominous darkness and I can honestly say it is highly enjoyable to listen to. Dark foreboding guitars and slow penetrating drums weld together along with deep, creepy gutturals. There are only two main tracks on this demo, but it is well worth the listen. I would try to pick a favourite track, but both ''Scourge Imposed'' and ''Deathmarch'' are epic and on point. One thing I could mention is that the quality of the tape is great. No homemade demo here, this is a high quality cassette. The cover image of what appears to be a reaper or a wraith is very striking, and the insert is just as cool. There is not much more I can say, except that I highly suggest checking these guys out. Fans of doom will not be let down! And yes Henry, we will for sure write some goregrind in the near future. I would love to! Devin out. -Devin Joseph Meaney
