Recently, I got the chance to read a handful of books I was meaning to read for a while now. One of these books was ''VAMPIRE$'', a fantasy thriller written by John Steakley. This book is action packed, has a romantic side in parts, and was genuinely one of the best vampire novels I have read in quite some time. One of the main protagonists, Jack Crow, is the purest definition of ''anti-hero'', and the majority of the other characters are lovable and sometimes relatable in their own way. From drunken vamp hunters to cliché priests and forlorn gun-men, this novel has everything you might want for an intriguing and adventurous read. The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that there were quite a few run on sentences, but this is easily forgiven as everything else about it was excellent and entirely on point. Taken from the back cover: ''Suppose there really were vampires. Dark. Stalking. Destroying. They'd have to be killed, wouldn't they? Of course they would. But what kind of fools would try to make a living at it?'' This novel was excellent from start to finish, and I encourage anyone who gets a chance to read it to do so. Written and released within the early 90's, this book stands up to the standards of today and I can imagine it being read and enjoyed for years and years to come. Gold seal! -Devin Joseph Meaney
