CD Review: HOWLING GIANT Black Hole Space Wizard Part 1

HOWLING GIANT
Black Hole Space Wizard Part 1
Independent
Channeling the spirit of Black Sabbath, Candlemass and Pentagram, Howling Giant play an upbeat form of doom metal. Variations in tempo are minimal, but a strong stoner/sludge influence is prevalent. The song “Mothership” sets the general pace of the EP “Black Hole Space Wizard Part 1.” The vocals add a nice stylistic touch and the drumming has the appropriate fills where expected. Guitar work is complemented by use of distorted bass though the strings generally follow each other, so differentiation between parts is difficult. “Exodus Earth” is a standout track with some nice guitar hooks, though again these are kept to a minimum. “Dirtmouth” offers a welcome variation in pace with an almost thrash-like element in execution. However this song is slightly let down through its repetitiveness and limited range of vocal delivery. The final song “Clouds of Smoke” is another example of where this band showcases its strength. The idea presented is the song is performed slowly and allows the doom influence to shine. It is definitely the standout track as the vocalist showcases his ability and the instrumentalists show unity along with astute song writing. A band with potential, let’s hope they can settle on a direction as there is definitely an underlying talent. -Simon Brown
