EP Review: STEELBALLS Steelballs

STEELBALLS
Steelballs
Witches’ Brew
Released December 24, 2016
With a name needing no further introduction, this Argentinian traditional metal quintet was just crying out to be reviewed. Influenced by acts such as Helloween, Manowar, Running Wild and the like, this band lies right in the hearts of 80’s power/thrash stylings. The opening title track has catchy sing along style choruses followed by technically solid leads with sweep picked arpeggios. Production is clear and not overdone. This means all parts including rhythm section can be heard without the feel of being recorded on a cheap laptop. Vocals are nice with a good range but not in the league of early Anthrax or Iron Maiden. “Farewell” is a nice follow up to the opening title track, following a similar formula in composition. The highlight of this 4 track EP is definitely the soloing, even though all tracks sit below the 4 minute mark. “Inquisitor of Fate” is probably the weakest track on the album, not because of any fault in composition, it just sounds the same as the previous two songs. “Starlight” does provide welcome variation in tempo and shows the band as much more than a one trick pony. Highly recommended for those seeking original power metal without Blind Guardian leanings. -Simon Brown
