Video Review: ABNORMALITY Cymatic Hallucinations by Simon Brown

ABNORMALITY
Cymatic Hallucinations
From their current full length Mechanisms of Omniscience (Metal Blade)
Abnormality’s video "Cymatic Hallucinations" from the "Mechanisms of Omniscience" album presents a highly polished yet not over produced death metal track. Expert lighting and effects show this is a band who care just as much about visual presentation as they do their art. Everything about this video is what a metal clip should be. A menacing soundtrack to a psychologically gripping feature of what the viewer can assume is a nightmare or hallucination. This Boston band combine the best elements of modern technical death metal with an old-school approach to brutality. No breakdowns or unnecessary tempo changes here. Equally impressive is the delivery from the female vocalist Mallika Sundaramurthy. The most powerful and convincing delivery I have heard in quite some time. All the other instrumentalists perform an outstanding job in breathing new life into a genre which becomes a one trick pony at times. The guitars have enough crunch to deliver skull crushing riffs whilst there is some nice bass work which allows for the guitars to focus on tremolo picking with string skipping a feature of the dissonant riffs on offer. “Core” bands should take note: THIS is how you should sound if you are looking to be brutal or terrifying. Highly recommended. Out now on Metal Blade records. -Simon Brown
