Poem: "People walking black dogs." by Steven Michael Pape

People walking black dogs.
Copyright Steven Michael Pape 2019

People walking black dogs,
On broken, uneven streets,
Faded scars from razor sharp teeth,
The dogs pulling the people,
Leading them towards danger.
To the edge of deep, dark water,
To the top of high imposing buildings,
Into faded factories with broken windows,
Blackened spoons and foil wraps,
Into off licences that sell the 9% fix,
Into early morning confusion,
Into violence and bloodshed,
The faces lined with anguish,
The eyes dead as yesterday,
Into the dark twilight of emptiness,
Black dogs walking people.
