Welcome back everyone to another Bandcamp review!
This time we will be discussing the band Sombre Figures (cool band name) and their 2021 album
-Streams Of Decay
You know, ironically the 7 tracks that make this album end up sounding exactly like the album title suggests a ‘Stream Of Decay’ because what your dealing with people is the dark arts of ‘Black Metal’ and not just any kind
FINNISH Black Metal, and anyone who knows their music will tell you some of the best music in the world comes from Finland! But it’s not just the combination of genre and location but also the fact this band has decided to keep the album
-Morbid and Rotten just like ‘A Stream Of Decay’.
Let me tell you, I’ve heard some blood curling Black Metal in my day but this album ranks right there with the most savage of them! They incorporate so many ruthless styles and sound combinations and even at points utilise what seems to be some hints of ’Dark Ambient’ combined in the background to give that extra dose of ‘darkness’ and ‘disturbance’ onto the listener.
As commonly associated with ’Black Metal’ you have that Lo Fi, unmastered quality to it as if it was recorded deep in someone’s basement with the lights turned off with nothing but anger and instrumentation in the room.
Those thrashing guitars and drums really sets the devilish tone for the 7 song experience and the depressing aesthetic is really one to watch out for if your not prepared for a metal level ass kicking!
Although it’s only added in the smallest of ways that extra sprinkle of ’Dark Ambience’ really hints the nail on the end in terms of distinguishing itself from the rest of the albums out there! The way it morphs and strengths the tracks around it to be ‘heavier, creepier and more demented’ then anything else heard in the past few years is scary but effective.
So, bottom line. Is it dark? Yes.
Is it sick and twisted? Without a shadow of a doubt.
Is it borderline psychotic and murderous? Definitely.
All these reasons and more are why you should check out this atrocity exhibition because it’s cruel and heartless the way a good ’Black Metal’ album should be and it will knock the teeth out of any other competition and so I ask you one final question.
Are you ready? Ready to attempt to conquer the ‘Stream Of Decay’? –Corban Skipwith
