Article: "Ambience" by Devin J. Meaney

Ambience
Article by Devin J. Meaney

I always talk about music, but anyone that actually knows me knows I have a thing for listening to ambience (recently even more so than listening to music). I am known here for my underground music writing but I have realized that in all my years of ambience consumption I have never once spoken of it! I have spoken of noise and noisecore and gorenoise and any kind of “anti musical” noise you can probably think of—but on the other end of the spectrum it seems I have failed to bring that to the light completely!
Ambience can vary depending on your palate. There is white noise, brown noise, red noise—but my interest is not in definition. My interest is showcasing the many differing ways you can enjoy audio ambience!
Some might want to listen to some red noise while watching the galaxy as they float by in their spacecraft. My most common form of ambience is just a background digital fireplace! Sometimes I add in a sleeping dog or some howling wind or snow. There are also rain storms, thunderstorms and more recently I have even indulged in the sound of purring kittens! Hell, if you wanted to you could turn your room into a hellscape—there truly is an endless supply of audio ambience available for listening…and paired with the right scents and lighting you can make your space completely your own! Whatever pleases you—there is probably an ambience for that!
If you have interest, just hit up YouTube and have a “look see” to see what is available. I can almost guarantee there will be something that strikes you as appealing. And seriously—silence can be golden, but with a little added touch and a sprinkle of your “flair” of choice—even the blandest of atmospheres can become bright and whimsical. Or dark and dreary—it truly is up to you!
So why not? Give ambience a shot. It can give energy or melt stress. There is great power in altering your surroundings. And whatever and wherever is positive for you—just go there!
