Silver Grime is my introduction to Swedish Epic Doom Metal, for which I'm thankful to be finally acquainted. After listening to their song Children, which I instantly fell in love with, I couldn't help but think they had borrowed a page from a songbook by the talented Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains. Naturally I could say I hear a little bit of Grunge influence in the grinding gears of Children's mechanics. Which for me is very inviting.
The lyrical content tells us of a caregiver who was supposed to be taking care of these precious children, but for whatever reason chose to instead let them die. We're not told about the methods of madness, only the ensuing sadness. Which thoroughly grasps us with its abundance of mystery and misery.
The video is wonderfully grotesque with images of children laughing, playing and dancing, pretending all is well. As the band pummels their instruments to conjure such a dark and brooding soundscape. Yet as we stay affixed to the video we see what can only be described as a monstrous individual. This female character is doused in darkness. She has the children scattering in all directions, and for good reason, as she's death's helper. Who know how many escaped her clutches, if any at all.
