While Dark Sky Burial is characterized as an ambient project, its latest single "Mask of Illusion" serves as an exploration of the numerous layers of haunting darkness that can be infused into a minimalist genre through avant-garde, experimental, electronic and drone elements.
Upon discovering that Shane Embury, known for his work with Unseen Terror, Napalm Death, Brujeria, Venomous Concept, Lock Up, and numerous other bands, was the driving creative force behind this project, I became eager to explore its direction.
As I began to listen I saw it was far removed from my expectations of dark ambient music. I recall observing the remarkable innovation Mortiis has exhibited since "Født til å herske", "Ånden som gjorde opprør" and other significant ambient and dungeon synth milestones. Today, Embury and Dark Sky Burial are elevating the genre to a new level of emotional depth and complexity.
As a preview of the complete DSB release scheduled for later this year, "Mask" explores a wide range of themes, introducing innovative and unprecedented techniques that build upon its shadowy origins. Collaborating with producer Russ Russell, Embury draws upon rhythms he had for some time, along with beat patterns and lyrics that he claims reflect his mindset and thoughts of the future.
The desired impact was enhanced by incorporating vocals to express his concepts and venture as far beyond conventional boundaries as possible, a pursuit Embury has been increasingly motivated to explore through his vocal work following his tours with Napalm Death and Melvins.
From warped electronic tones, resounding percussion accents and eerie keyboard melodies to atmospheric guitar riffs and haunting goth-inspired vocals, culminating in a desolate and solitary conclusion, along with a mesmerizing rhythm that unifies it all, "Mask" stands apart from any dark ambient albums you’ve encountered. –Dave Wolff
