Let’s have a small discussion for a second, can you name a ‘Black Metal’ band that has had more of an expeditious discography then Satyricon? Even over 10 years ago when I first discovered them they were getting critical acclaim for pushing boundaries, breaking records for the sub-genre and making waves, and well over a decade later they are once again breaking new ground, what a phenomenal band.
This time they released a collaboration track which clocks in at an enormous 56 minutes and 8 seconds which is a collaboration with a long dead painter ‘Edvard Munch’ yes you read that correctly, this is to accompany an exhibition of Edvard’s art.
Can you think of any other ‘Black Metal’ artist, no scratch that METAL artist in general who is pushing the limits as far as Satyricon is? This is just unbelievable to me in so many ways, I can’t even begin to imagine the concept myself but that’s why they are one of the greats.
The music piece is beyond extraordinary! It utilizes a trait that I love most in music ‘Patience’ it’s a quality too often overlooked and misunderstood in the art of music but when it’s in the right hands such as bands like ‘Swans’ or ‘Godspeed You Black Emperor’ then magic can be made and this is exactly what we have here pure unadulterated ‘magic’.
Throughout this whole piece there is not a single boring moment, never a dull minute or passage that had anything to be desired, this is just straight engaging art at its best. It’s the kind of music you would listen to if you wanted an ‘experience’ something to play to accompany you on a big walk or adventure, a trip or mind bending session to open up your mind, soul and heart to a piece of overture with gigantic proportions and passages so big and powerful that it may be too intense to finish in one sitting but I guarantee you it’s worth every second.
I really don’t have any more to say then please take the hour out of your day and go live this album for what it has to offer because I can guarantee you NO album, EP or Demo will come close to touching what this masterpiece brought to the table. –Corban Skipwith
