CD Review: VESICATORIA Awakening

VESICATORIA
Awakening
Atypeek Records
Vesicatoria is a dark ambient and industrial project based in Minsk, Belarus formed in 1999. Having been the first dark ambience project to come out of Belarus, it becomes obvious throughout this release they have honed their distinct interpretation of the genre expertly.
The opening track “Apparition” is haunting and experimental in a well-constructed manner- with added noise tones commanding the listener’s attention. The experimental theme continues consistently throughout this release- every track provides an insight into the multifaceted talent that is Vesicatoria.
“Applegrub Complex” provides a dramatic contrast to the more tonal and impressionist “Clarity” demonstrating effectively Vesicatoria’s ability to switch concepts cohesively at breakneck speed. The slight electronica and noise aspects of “Desperation” reinforces the diversity of “Awakening”- with both a tangible and mournful overtone tangible to the listener.
The emotive “Minsk Underground” provides the listener with a distinct yet slightly depressive aural impression of nihilistic and bleak landscape- contrasted in an insightful manner by the oddly meditative “Number 0”.
The drone influence is a definite musical factor in “Technology Worms”- a dark ambient piece rife with a chaotic and threatening undertone. Vesicatoria once again proves their diverse musical approach with the experimental noise contrast of “Rust”, leaving the listener to appreciate the impressive musical spectrum displayed within this release.
“Torment of War” is a fitting and conceptually strong concluding track to “Awakening” with its strong, experimental aspects and disorientating, menacing tone leaving a sound impression on the listener.
Both imaginative and commanding in its execution- “Awakening” is a noteworthy release. An absolute pleasure to review- I genuinely look forward to hearing more of Vesicatoria’s material and earlier releases. -Sarah McKellar
