This review features a top-notch extreme example of extreme metal, something that’s essential; listening. But don't take my word for it, listen to it for yourself. You'll understand why Kaivs' debut full-length "After the Flesh" deserves a spot on your list of new releases if you appreciate Autopsy, Amon Amarth, Hypocrisy, demo-era Marduk, and bands that were influenced by them in one way or another.
When assessing newer musicians, I often mention such bands, but in this instance, it appears to fit beyond doubt. Even more so than on their debut EP "Horrend" (2023), this Italian DM band has elevated their music to an unnerving level of ascerbic intensity and commitment. This even makes the Swedish sound seem tame in contrast.
At less than a quarter of an hour, "Horrend" was comparable to damnation’s soundtrack. "After the Flesh" is the aural equivalent of hell's higher authorities inflicting the torment. Kaivs emphasizes heaviness, abrasion, and harsh guttural vocals out of clear awareness of the impressions they want to leave on new listeners. Their desire to make a name for themselves in the broad world of death metal is evident in every note and percussion pulse.
Including all three songs from "Horrend", "After the Flesh" demonstrates a desire to remind you of the unwavering, uncompromising attitude that was first exhibited by second wave DM, when bands performed as loudly as they pleased, regardless of who it irritaated, leaving you wanting to see more brutality from them. It's horrifying how Kaivs batter you mercilessly, but equally impressive how they add some elements of thrash, doom, and grindcore, daring to be melodic in many places while retaining their characteritic severity.
After a while, the combination of relentless instruments, articulate vocals and invigorating production comes with a repetitive songwriting caliber that becomes soporific, desensitizing your awareness almost beyond recovery. To put it simply, your passion for relentlessly savage, unyieldingly barbarous metal will be rekindled by this album. –Dave Wolff
