This film is a great description of what each person experiences as a result of any religion's leaders going on a power rampage. The setting for this story is even before the Crusades, showing that this has been an issue from the beginning. The destruction of the library brings to mind the fact that the Catholics, later in history, had all bibles destroyed then had their own monks rewrite it the way they wanted it written. They effectively kept the general population from ever knowing the original bible.
The weapons might be different from today, but the results are the same. It also shows how quick those leaders were to proclaim witchcraft, knowing that proclamation would almost certainly lead to death.
This intelligent woman, Hypatia, refused to let anything or anyone get in the way of her research and investigations. She was well ahead of her time in knowledge and wisdom, and the religious men, then and now, despise that in a woman. Even those men who were not religious joined the forces they believed couldn't be defeated and so became a part of the group that brought about her death.
The violence of one religious group against others has always been. Humankind cannot simply exist and accept that each of us sees things in unique ways. Each faction feels the need to force everyone else to believe a specific way. I even know some occultists who belittle other beliefs. I don't know what force is there inside humans that causes this, but it is truly a sad fact..
