It's been a long time since I listened to Fulci's "Tropical Sun," their tribute to Lucio Fulci's undead milestone "Zombie," and in that time they've released a number of singles, splits, full-length albums and collaborations. When I discovered that one of their most recent releases was a split single with Italian electronica artist Talpah and learned about the nature of the recording, I was eager to give "Cyberflesh" a listen.
For a band that has stubbornly held onto their love of brutal death metal/grind and horror since 2014, they seem enthusiastic enough to venture into cyber grind/electronic territory for this single, arranged by Time To Kill Records, an indie label that supports metal, death metal, grindcore, and the like, and the publishing company Hollow Press, which specializes in comics from the US, Europe, and Japan, as well as video games.
I wasn’t too familiar with Talpah, so I had to look him up for research. I discovered he's a solo artist who has released a long line of material, most of which can be streamed at Bandcamp, YouTube and SoundCloud, since 2014. His self-produced work is described as peculiar, contemporary but extreme, fusing dubstep, dance music, electronica and similar genres, hard to track down but worth the effort.
What I uncovered on his streaming sites and interviews piqued my interest about his involvement in this split and made me wonder how Skrillex would sound if he ingested the appropriate quantity of mind-expanding substances before composing.
You can immediately recognize this is an enormous departure for Fulci, integrating death metal with the unorthodox, dismal sounds Talpah's writing is based on. Keep in mind this is only one of the band's recent collaborations, and Fulci's experience at this shines through as their brutal, precise riffs and low-pitched vocals blend with samples, rhythms, electronic noises, and other elements.
The two genres fade in and out like waves, then join like a crashing tsunami in the most unexpected ways. Both these tracks are equally founded in Fulci and Talpah’s shared experience, their shared ability to connect their worlds and make the connection explode into something new, with potential to expand beyond any expectations those involved had when this collaboration was still just an idea.
Though there are just two tracks here, you may find yourself wanting to hear them over and over due to their ingenuity and the artists' willingness to take risks with their music and respective fan bases. -Dave Wolff
