CD Review: NIHILISTINEN BARBAARISUUS "Madness Incarnate" (Symbol of Domination Prod) by Sarah McKellar

Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus is a Pennsylvania based, Helsinki influenced, ambient black metal project. “Madness Incarnate” is their May 2016 release featuring appearances by Gary Hadden, Joel Robert Thompson and James Dorton. A distinct nihilistic and atmospheric tone is set immediately within the first track- while still remaining technically brutal enough to engage the listener. Consistent musical changes throughout “Madness Incarnate” demonstrate Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus’ versatility and impressive ability to switch styles cohesively while retaining their customary grim, nihilistic approach. Particularly noteworthy within “Madness Incarnate” is the oddly, uplifting feeling portrayed throughout this release- an excellent contrast and yet another ear catching aspect to Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus. Musically intense and diverse- the adaptability is to be admired throughout “Madness Incarnate” as the listener can distinctly hear the different approaches in every track, while remaining true to Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus’ sound. The instrumental breaks provide a brief but welcome contrast to the sheer level of consistent brutal tightness throughout this release- allowing the listener to appreciate the level of versatility displayed. The concluding instrumental provides an insight into another musical aspect of the diversity of Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus- an unexpected, comparatively simplistic and musically interesting twist to a consistently strong release. With many musical aspects to appreciate combined with a depressive, raw black metal influence ensure “Madness Incarnate” will be instantly engaging to the listener. -Sarah McKellar
