EP Review: NOX CULT Fucking Live by Dave Wolff

Fucking Live
Independent
Having formed a year and a half before this live EP was released, Nox Cult personify the crossing over of hardcore, punk, grunge and industrial as viewed through the eyes of a mentally disturbed nuthouse escapee. As suggested by the title of this EP, the band recorded it live for a first impression rather than recording in a studio. A risky move for a new band but it displays the dissonant, manic rawness not unlike Nausea and Sonic Youth meeting in an abandoned nuclear waste facility. The atmosphere of the songs and the live setting where they were taped (the Brooklyn club Black Bear in December 2015) are toxic and disturbed as the band differentiate little between animal abusers, serial killers and high school bullies. To Nox Cult, they have the same mental defects and are equally viable targets. The first track entitled Elephant conveys what the band imagine is going through the mind of an elephant performing for the circus. A relevant piece for the times since it’s been in the news that the people at Ringling Brothers/Barnum and Bailey were under fire from animal rights activists for their treatment of elephants, and are out of show business since they stopped featuring elephants and ticket sales went down. The next track Maniacs spotlights Charles Manson who bands have consistently referred to for many years. If I can say anything about this song it reflects the shock and panic society felt about the Manson murders, and the endless book and media coverage about those horrific events. Unpopular Kids shows the angst felt by young people at being repeatedly told they’re unwelcome by the “cool” high school kids. This is also relevant considering some people who were “cool” carry their antics into adulthood. Things seem to cut off rather abruptly after this song, but in NOX CULT Message the band announce they are working on a new release. The new release in question has yet to come out but in the meantime you can check out releases by other bands fronted by frontman Soda at NOX CULT's Bandcamp profile. -Dave Wolff
